A brilliant, darkly funny novel that explores the role of luck and merit, class, ambition and sacrifice, The Farm is an unforgettable story about how we live and who truly holds power.

Book review:

The Farm, named Golden Oaks a beautiful mansion in upstate New York run by grievous businesswoman Mae Yu where immigrant women are chosen as the surrogates of wealthy couples who themselves do not want to go through the phases or do not want their life to be disrupted or due to some other reasons. The “hosts” are housed in luxury, pampered, paid substantially for their service and fed healthy meals to produce the most perfect babies for their clients. Every action of the surrogates are monitored. They had to give up all contacts with the outside world and were sworn to secrecy.

Jane an immigrant from the Philippines and a mother of a child named Amalia goes to the farm to fulfil the dreams and procure good life for her daughter. Jane later learns why she was chosen and as the story slowly unfolds, Jane needs to find a way out.

This book with the characters are compelling and although the ending is thought-provoking yet it was disturbing at the same time. The immigrants are the sufferers due to the inequality in society and the rising capitalism. The women as hosts are treated as an object. The fact that rich people are getting richer and the poor ones are getting poorer is abruptly depicted in the whole book. You never know if “The Farm” already exists in this real world.
